As a college student, I am fervently pursuing a career and experience in editing. Currently, I am studying Journalism, digital and print media, and English, rhetoric and writing, as well as minoring in History at the University of North Texas. I have been published multiple times in my school newspaper, and recently won a university fiction short story award, so I know a thing or two about writing fiction and nonfiction.
In preparation for what will soon be a full time career in developmental and/or line editing, I work as a writing tutor at my university’s writing lab. I love working with authors on everything from narrative essays to biology lab reports. Consequently, my editing skills are expansive across genres, styles, and experience levels.

Experience
Historically, I have mounds of experience editing my peers essays and personal projects, workshopping my classmates’ short stories, and instructing students.
More importantly, this past summer I worked alongside editor Sara Kocek at her company Yellow Bird Editors. I researched and wrote several blog posts on creative writing, the publishing industry, and the business of authorship. I also shadowed her in the developmental editing of two up and coming authors’ manuscripts.
The first manuscript was a Christian self help and memoir book by a first time author. The edit was heavily concerning structural elements and clarity of advisory text. After writing the author a developmental letter, Kocek and I engaged in a meeting with the author to clarify any questions she had, and give her more advice on moving forward with her project. This including decisions on finding literary agents, printers, and self publishing pathways.
The second manuscript was a women’s fiction book club novel. This developmental edit leaned on characterization opportunities and expanding certain plot elements. During this author’s post editorial call, we discussed changes in the plot structure to emphasize the themes and maintain flow.
Approach
The most important part of editing, is that the author is always at the wheel. I am here to fine tune the bits and pieces that you’re not sure how to correct and provide my expertise on writing, structure, and flow.
The first step in editing a gentle development letter that can clarify what needs some changing, but more importantly what is working really well! I have found that positive reinforcement is a much more effective motivator for most authors. This doesn’t mean I will ignore areas in need of improvement, but I will give you specific feedback that revolves around explanation and transparency, not negation.
Once you are happy with the developmental elements of your text, I am happy to perform a line edit to fine tune and sharpen the individual sentences of your text in structure and grammar. My aim during this process is that your voice is the only one that readers an hear in the text.
